In South Asia and Southeast Asian cuisine, banana hearts (banana flowers) are used as vegetable. It can be eaten raw or steamed or cooked in curries, fried food and soups. When you open the fruit (also known as flower) you will notice many small flowers that will turns in bananas when pollinated. The flavor resembles of artichoke as the fleshy part of the bracts and hearts are edible. In order to consume them you need to remove the protective outer layer (purplish peel/skins). When you cut the banana flower you need to rub with some lemon slices or lemon juice on the surface to prevent from browning.
