Petai (Parkia Speciosa)
Petai is also known as Bitter Bean or Stink Bean. The botanical name is Parkia Speciosa. These beans are popular in Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Lao, Burma and the Northeastern parts of India. These are usually sold in bunches and sometimes the seeds are sold wrapped in plastic bags. You can also get them in cans, frozen and pickled in brine.
The plant bears a long and with flat edible beans which shape of broad beans with a very unusual smell similar to natural gas. It has to be peeled from the casing like green peas and use the seeds. The seeds are best when combined with garlic, chili peppers and dried shrimp. If you are unfamiliar with this vegetable you might be turned off by the smell.
